Lunatic Cloud Ten

Charlotte Triebus

Performance and installation, 2017

A dancer rises slowly beside a white cloud. As the cloud fills with air, their movements fall into step.

Outside the illuminated festival building at night, a crowd watches a performer beside the white cloud.

Charlotte Triebus performs with an air-driven fabric sphere 3.2 metres across. Over twenty-five minutes she rises, joins the cloud and gradually draws away from the audience. Air acts like a muscle between them. A small shift in the fabric can follow her movement or prompt the next one.

Nicola L. Hein composed the soundscape from recordings of sixteen prepared fans and twelve prepared solenoids. Their whir and rattle accompany the almost imperceptible rise of the fabric. After the performance, the cloud stays in the room, expanding and subsiding.
